The first step to understanding any industry is to understand its language. Here is the first part of our 2-part series, “10 Digital Publishing Terms to Know.”

1. CRM

CRM is the acronym for Customer Relationship Management. CRM systems handle large-scale customer data and interactions. They gather customer information into one big database so users can access it easily.

Why It Matters to You: With more subscribers come more responsibilities. Great CRM systems let publishers manage their subscribers with effective organizational tools. To make your publications successful, a CRM should also let you create custom mailing campaigns and use analytics to track statistics and subscriber activity.

Joomag’s Awesome CRM provides publishers the opportunity to manage leads and subscribers, create lists of existing contacts, deliver complementary subscriptions, send out mass mailing campaigns, analyze them, and much more.

2. SEO

SEO is the acronym for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is the process of increasing a web page’s search engine visibility, usually with keywords or phrases. The top websites that appear on a Google search results page, for example, have used SEO more effectively than others because they show up first.

Why It Matters to You: SEO can significantly improve your publication’s search engine visibility. Many digital publishing platforms let you choose which keywords or phrases from your publication will appear on search engines. SEO’s goal is to increase your publication’s traffic and get it more views, so it’s important you choose the right keywords!

Joomag’s SEO settings help publishers improve the visibility of their online magazines on all major search engines.

3. Branding

Branding is a marketing term that refers to creating a logo or symbol and placing it on a product. Branding distinguishes one competitor from another, among other things.

Why It Matters to You: Having your logo appear on your publications is an effective marketing strategy because it establishes brand equity. Brand equity means your brand name is more valued than others which sell the same or similar product. With consistent branding and great content, you can charge more for your publications because readers associate more value to them.

Joomag lets you customize your online publications by adding branding to them.

4. Mobile optimization

Mobile Optimization is adjusting a website for mobile devices such as smartphones. Mobile optimization lets people easily read and navigate through content from the small screens of mobile devices.

Why It Matters to You: Figures suggest that more than 63.4 percent of mobile phone users will access online content through their devices by 2017. It’s all the more reason to have your publications optimized for these devices. A lot of users won’t come back to a poorly optimized mobile publication. So do them a HUGE favor by making sure your content is mobile-friendly.

5. Hotspot

Hotspot is a clickable area on an image that is linked (or hyperlinked) to another action. These actions can take users to other sites, other sections of the same site, play sound or video, and more.

Why It Matters to You: It’s all for convenience’s sake! Hotspots in your publications can 1) be used in a table of contents page to save readers time 2) open new websites (like your own) so readers can find more information or 3) provide a more detailed view of a selected image. With hotspots, readers can find all the info they need right from your publication or from any external sites.Joomag’s hotspot setting is widely accepted and used by publishers.
