PDF (or Portable Document Format) was first introduced to the public back in the early 1990s, yet it remains an industry standard for sharing documents to this day. That’s largely because PDF files maintain fixed layouts regardless of the device they’re viewed on. With them, businesses can maintain consistent client records, invoice customers more efficiently, and exchange important documents hassle-free.
But with technology continuing to evolve every year, PDFs just aren’t enough anymore. The rules have changed; every piece of content you create today HAS to be responsive, user-friendly, and accessible. And that’s why more and more publishers are instead opting to convert their PDF files into HTML5 content. Here’s why:
HTML5 is compatible with every device, including smartphones, desktop computers, and tablets. It fits on everything!
On the other hand, content that’s not converted to HTML5 is difficult to navigate and often riddled with annoying UI issues. Readers shouldn't have to pinch and zoom to read stuff nowadays.
HTML5 content is much easier to share on social media.
Content creators can track visits and other usage metrics via analytics.
Viewers don’t need any additional software to view HTML5 content.
HTML5 content is flexible; PDF documents are fixed. The former can even be edited in real time.
A few examples of publications created by converting PDF to HTML5

2.

Joomag Enhancer — a fast, fun, and simple way to convert PDFs into interactive HTML5 publications
As pioneers of the digital publishing industry, we’re always pushing the boundaries of innovative technology. But we wouldn’t be able to without the help of our fans. We spent months sifting through our customers’ feedback, and a common denominator we found was that many of them use PDF files as the bases for their publications. That's why we developed the Joomag Enhancer.
What is it? In a nutshell, it's a tool that lets you easily add interactive elements to an uploaded PDF file. With Adobe Flash support ending soon (RIP), we wanted to give our customers a faster, more intuitive way to customize their PDF files. With just a few clicks, users can now place various URLs inside their publications and enhance them like never before.
The Joomag Enhancer gives users the ability to quickly add Youtube and Vimeo links to their publications. It also features a "Go-To page" option which lets readers jump to any page they want!
How to use the Joomag Enhancer (spoiler: it’s really, really easy)
1. Login to your Joomag account. Then click the “Create Publication” button near the top-right corner of your dashboard. Next, name your publication.

2. On the next screen, choose the “Use a PDF File” option. Then upload your publication by dragging and dropping it into the designated space or by browsing your computer’s files.

3. Once that’s finished, select the “Edit Content” button.

4. Congrats, you’ve made it to the Joomag Enhancer! The Pages Overview screen is the very first one you’ll see.

5. To add interactive elements to a page, hover over it and click “Edit.”

6. Highlight the area you'd like to add an interactive element in.

7. You’ll then be able to add different types of links to your publication: Web page, mailto, call-able and internal links, YouTube / Vimeo videos, embedded custom mp4 video, embedded audio file player, hotspot triggering a custom image via popup, embedded web page in a popup.

To add a web link, simply copy and paste its URL into the designated box and click “Done.”

To add a video, copy and paste its Youtube/Vimeo link into the box. If you want the video to play in a separate popup overlay, choose the “Overlay” option. If you want the video to play on the page itself, select the “Embed” option instead. Click “Done” after you’ve made your choice.

With the “Go-To page” option, readers can instantly jump to any page within your publication. You can direct readers to a specific page, the next one, the previous one, the cover page, or the very last page. Make your choice and click “Done.” That’s it!
To add a phone number, or email just enter the info into the field and click “Done.

You can upload video files with up to 300MB in .MP4 format or audio files with up to 300MB in .MP3 format to your publications. You can also choose an image or embedded web page be shown as popups.
